When the Olympia Mill Village Museum project started back in September 2013, we had no idea of the mountain we started to climb. Even though our days are filled with highs and lows, this has been a labor of love that is keeping our Linthead Spirit alive. Losing one of our most ardent supporters, Johnny Henry, has impacted our project in many ways. With the help of a huge "community" who love this place, we are nearing the final stages. Recent news events are:
Bad news: We had to postpone our scheduled opening date for five weeks because of some new issues with termites, drainage, and permitting. New date is Friday, November 2 @ 1:00.
Good News: Our friends at Modern Exterminating donated their treatment services. Thank you, George and Glenn Matthews.
Good News: Content and photos telling story of "Mill Village Life" in the house and "History of Olympia School" in the Olympia Annex is being finalized. Good News: Our web site is being revamped by technology volunteers and a new "social media" presence will soon be launched.
Bad News: Work moves much slower than anticipated.
Good News: We have received a donation of 150 sheets of dry wall for our interior rehab from Columbia Builder Association.
Good News: Our Museum consultant is developing seven technology stations with equipment purchased using grant funds from Carolina Community Cares and RC Conservation Commission.
Good News: Our new opening date is Friday, November 2 at 1:00. Plans for the opening ceremony are in the works.
Good News: Museum will be open 15 hours a week from 11:00--4:00 on Fri. and Sat. and 1:00--4:00 on Sun., and it will be staffed by Volunteers.
Good News: Our Volunteer Corps and Guidelines are being developed.
Bad News: Unfortunately, a $15,000 grant from Richland County Hospitality Tax cannot be used to finish off our exterior site development and our parking lot as planned. That is a blow to our budget.
Good News: Even though we are running low on money, we are determined to get this project complete.
Good News: We are making an appeal to our loyal donor base and other interested parties to help us get it done.
Thank you to anyone who has made a donation, contributed artifacts, encouraged us along, or supported this effort in any way. We are OLYMPIA STRONG!
